What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui, pronounced "fung shway", is an eastern philosophy guided by positive energy called "chi" that forms part of a lifestyle lived in such a way to allow the positive energy to influence your life. This ancient Chinese philosophy is more than 3000 years old and ruled by an ancient science where objects are arranged in such a way to balance sacred energy and to attract positive energy to your life.

Literally translated, Feng Shui means "wind" and "water". It is based on the believe that there is energy all around us and when managed correctly, could bring prosperity and success to your life. This believe is aided by the three elements fire, metal and wood and are also guided by the science of the stars, planets, dates, seasons and colour.

In Feng Shui, a compass is used to establish which rooms in your home are more beneficial for placement of certain elements and where to enhance energy and where to deflect it. The compass is called the Bagua or Pa Kua and analyzes the Feng Shui energy in any given space. There are eight areas or directions and each has a Feng Shui element, colour and areas associated with it. Those who live according to the Feng Shui philosophy and Bagua map, believe that the flow of positive energy into there lives has made a great difference to there success, wealth and prosperity.

  • The Bagua is used to determine information about your location, home, office or rooms within your home.
  • For North, the Feng Shui element is water, the colour is blue and black and the life area it will enhance is your career and life path.
  • For Northeast the Feng Shui element is earth, the colours will be beige, light yellow and sandy earth colours. The life area it will help with is spiritual growth and cultivation.
  • The element for East is Wood; colours are brown and green and will enhance your health and family life.
  • Southeast is influenced by Wood, brown and green colours and will have an influence on our money and abundant life.
  • The Feng Shui element for South is fire and the colours, red, orange, pink, purple and yellow. They will positively influence out fame and reputation and the light within you.
  • The element for Southwest is Earth. Its colours are beige, sand and earthy colours and light yellow. It will enhance your love life and marriage.
  • West is governed by Metal and the colours are white and grey. They will influence your children and creativity.
  • For Northwest, the Feng Shui element is also metal and the colours again grey and white. The area it will enhance is travelling, blessings and helpful people in your life.

By applying these element and colours in accordance to their directions, powerful results will take effect in your life, home and business ventures. It is believed that Feng Shui is like a double edged sword as it can be both productive and destructive, depending on how it is used and arranged. In a positive cycle fire will produce earth, earth will produce metal, metal produces water which will in turn produce wood and again fire. A natural cycle of life. In a destructive cycle these are reversed and all is destroyed.

Should you be born in the year of Fire, you should not have too much water in your home as water will kill the fire. In this case wood would be the best element to use in your home to create positive energy as everyone knows wood produces fire. You would also sleep in the south side of your home as here is where prosperity is found.

To assure a meaningful and prosperous life for yourself and your family, practicing Feng Shui can certainly be to your advantage in keeping harmony and balance in the elements around you and in your life.
